2010 Lunch on the Lane Concert Series Set for Fridays in June

Performers Announced

(Westminster, MD) -- It’s almost summer, and there are lots of reasons for getting outside. One of them is the free 2010 Lunch on the Lane Concert Series in Downtown Westminster.

Great musical sounds will abound from the Locust Lane stage every Friday at Noon during the month of June, as the Lunch on the Lane Concert Series comes back to rock the town.

Leftstronger will kick off the series on Friday, June 4th. Leftstronger is an amazing band that performs all original music in the style of Alice in Chains, Shinedown, Creed and Soundgarden. Leftstronger's music combines all the elements of great, radio-friendly rock and roll: catchy hooks, hard-driving rhythms and strong vocal harmonies.

Skydivers from Baltimore, Maryland, will perform their pop/rock, indie music on June 11th. Local band Twenty for Seven takes to the Locust Lane stage on June 18th in their first appearance at Lunch on the Lane.

Sepia closes out the series on June 25th. Labeled by some as post-punk folk rock, Sepia pulls from a diverse set of influences spanning blues, rock, punk, metal, and pop. Regardless of labels, the music is all unique and all Sepia.

Each concert runs from 12 noon to 1:00 pm; so buy a brown bag lunch, a hoagie or a slice of pizza from one of our fine downtown eateries and come listen to the music while you savor our local flavors.

The Downtown Westminster Main Street Program and Coffey Music are once again the proud sponsors of the Lunch on the Lane Concert Series.

Locust Lane Stage is just off East Main Street, across from the Westminster branch of the Carroll Public Library, between Pomeroy Jewelers and The Optical Solution. Ample parking is available in the Longwell Parking Deck and Sherwood Lot behind Locust Lane.

Santa Claus is greeted by Westminster mayor in undated old picture

Santa Claus is greeted by Westminster Mayor Mathias and community leaders at Santa’s house on Locust Lane in downtown Westminster in this undated photo from either the late 1950s or very early 1960s. http://tinyurl.com/yb26gow

This is an undated photograph from the very early 1960s or 1950s, from old family papers. The photographer is unknown.

The gentlemen in the picture have been identified as best as possible. If someone believes that anyone has been misidentified, please be in touch. And of course, if any one knows the names of any the folks who are unidentified, that would be great.

Left to right in the front: 1 unidentified child; 2 immediately to Santa’s right, our left, is Andy Dietrich, the manager of Coffman Fisher; 3 Santa Claus was probably Kale Mathias; 4 Mayor Joseph L. Mathias is shaking hands with Santa Claus; 5 behind the handshake is Paul Wimert, the husband of Gladys Wimert and the manager of Mather’s.

In the back is 6, Harry Starr, standing behind Andy Dietrich. He was the manager of Gorsuch and Little. 7 is the gentleman who is pictured with glasses, but without a hat and he is unidentified. 8 the gentleman who is almost obscured by Santa Claus is, unfortunately also unidentified; and 9 is Atlee Wampler, representing the Retail Merchants Association.

Up through at least 1947, the city’s Christmas festivities took place at the forks at West Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue; which at the time was considered to be the center of the downtown business district.

Mayor Mathias died in office on December 3, 1963 after serving in office continuously since May 18, 1942. Santa’s House in this picture is located on Main Street in what was then-Locust Lane, beside 41 East Main Street.

A portion of this information came from an interview of Mr. David Babylon, Jr., by Kevin Dayhoff on January 20, 2002. Mr. Babylon served on the Westminster Common Council from Westminster City Council May 11, 1964 to May 19, 1989.

On August 24, 2009 at approximately 10:40 p.m. officers were dispatched to the area of Locust Lane in Westminster for the report of an armed robbery which had just occurred. Upon arrival they contacted the victim, Jose Gomez, who is the owner of the Lilly’s Mexican Mart located at 39 East Main Street. Mr. Gomez reported that he, his wife and 5-year old son had closed the business and were walking through Locust Lane on the way to their vehicle when the robbery occurred.

According to Gomez, they were approached from behind by a white male who threatened them with a knife and demanded their money. Mr. Gomez turned over his cash at which time the suspect fled on foot toward Main Street. Gomez described the suspect as a tall slender white male with short hair and a prominent nose. The suspect was also wearing distinctive clothing the time of the robbery.

Another officer working at the time of the robbery recognized the suspect description as an individual he had encountered earlier in the evening. A photo array was prepared and the victim ultimately identified the suspect, Ronald Lee Foy, 27 years of age of Westminster, as the individual who robbed him. Officers located Foy on foot on West Main Street at approximately 1:20 a.m. and took him into custody without incident. The currency taken in the robbery was subsequently recovered on his person.

In a post-arrest interview, Mr. Foy made several statements implicating him in the robbery. He has subsequently been charged with armed robbery, theft and related charges. He is currently incarcerated in the Carroll County Detention Center in lieu of a $50,000.00 bond.
