On Friday, early in the afternoon, Sept. 23, 2016, a driver blew through an accident scene on westbound Rt. 140 and Sandymount Road, almost hit a Westminster Vol. Fire Dept. EMS provider, and sideswiped ambulance 38.

Several folks including Don West, Dean Camlin, and Eddie Brooks organized a candle light vigil at JeannieBird Baking Company, 42 West Main Street, in Westminster, MD.

Hats off to these community leaders for their thoughtfulness. Carroll County always comes together and we are there for one another.

A big thanks to Don, Dean, and Eddie. Beautifully done.

And a special thanks to Thomas Kowalczyk and Rad Darby who also stopped to help out and pay their respects. First class.

We also say a prayer for the firefighters, EMS personnel, state highway workers, and police officers who left their homes in the middle of night to respond to this terrible accident. They fought the fire, freezing temperatures, ice, and multiple dangers of the accident this morning at Rte. 27 and Kate Wagner Road.

Police believe owner of JeannieBird bakery killed in Route 27 crash

Police believe the owner of a popular Westminster bakery and café was killed in fiery traffic crash involving a tractor trailer on Route 27 early Friday morning.

Because of the severity of the injuries, Maryland State Police investigators were unable to positively confirm the identification of the deceased victim prior to autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. However, based on evidence retrieved from the scene of the crash, in addition to information received from family members, investigators believe the victim was Jeannie Vogel.

Vogel, 53, co-owned JeannieBird Baking Company on Main Street in Westminster. The crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m. when the tractor-trailer struck the vehicle Vogel was driving, causing both vehicles to catch fire…

(THURMONT, MD) — Maryland State Police are searching for the driver of a hit and run vehicle that struck and killed a U.S. Marine who had stopped to help a disabled motorist along Rt. 15 in Frederick County last night.

The deceased is identified as William Ferrell, 21, of Carthage, N.C. He was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the Naval Support Facility in Thurmont, Md.

At about 10:50 p.m. yesterday, troopers from the Frederick Barrack were dispatched to a hit and run crash on northbound US Rt. 15, north of Auburn Rd, in Thurmont.

The preliminary investigation indicates Ferrell had stopped in his 2012 Nissan Titan to help a motorist whose vehicle was disabled during the heavy rain storm.

Evidence indicates Ferrell was standing outside of his truck on the highway shoulder when an unknown vehicle struck him, causing fatal injuries. The vehicle also struck the victim’s vehicle.

The suspect vehicle is described as either a truck tractor or a heavy duty pick-up truck towing a car hauling trailer. Witnesses said the vehicle stopped briefly north of the crash, but soon left without contacting anyone at the scene. The vehicle should have obvious damage to the right side of the truck and or the trailer it was hauling.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have information about the hit and run vehicle and/or driver is urged to immediately contact the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack at 301-600-4151. Callers may remain anonymous.

The crash remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team. The northbound lanes of US RT 15, north of Auburn Road were closed for approximately four hours with the assistance of personnel from the Maryland State Highway Administration. The roadway was reopened at approximately 3:30 a.m. today.

On March 25, 1998, Trooper Raymond Armstead, 27 years old and a 14 month veteran of the Maryland State Police was operating his patrol vehicle northbound on I-295, south of Powder Mill Road in Prince George's County when he observed someone on the shoulder of the road waving their arms for assistance.

Realizing there had been an accident, Trooper Armstead attempted to cross the lanes of traffic to assist the stranded motorists. As Trooper Armstead focused on the shoulder activity, the traffic ahead of him stopped. Trooper Armstead's patrol car collided with a van that was stopped in front of him causing him to become trapped in his vehicle for approximately 30 minutes. Once extracted, Trooper Armstead was flown to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he was pronounced dead shortly before 3:00 pm

Congress hasn’t approved a long-term highway bill since 2005, and it’s become much more difficult to move legislation since then because of a variety of reasons, including the end of earmarks that directed money toward specific lawmaker-backed projects and a financial crisis and recession that made it tougher to move big-budget bills.
