Poll numbers, media frame debates By Adam Bednar

Poll numbers, media frame debates

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 By Adam Bednar, Times Staff Writer

The competitiveness of a campaign and the media coverage of it are major factors that affect how voters view a political debate.

Gov. Martin O'Malley and former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich taped the gubernatorial campaign's first of four debates Monday morning, and it was broadcast that night.

Before noon, both campaigns tried to frame the results as a triumph for their respective candidates by sending out e-mails claiming victory to news organizations.

Controlling the tone of the coverage during the following news cycle is almost as important as the candidates' performance in the debate, according to Richard Vatz, a professor of communication and rhetoric at Towson University.

"Many people don't get their reactions from the debate itself; they get it from the reporting of the debate," he said.

Herb Smith, a professor of political science at McDaniel College, also said the impact of a debate is relative to a campaign's competitiveness.

The Jessamy-Bernstein Debate: Substance to Bernstein; Style to Bernstein; Penalty Points Against Jessamy – Likely Primary Election Winner: Jessamy

The August 12 debate between Patricia Jessamy and Gregg Bernstein on WYPR’s “Midday with Dan Rodricks” tells us a lot about political debates, and it also tells us a lot about the principals and their principles in the current race for City State’s Attorney in the Democratic primary.

When candidates have an unfriendly debate filled with unpleasant, personal attacks, the debate tends to be reported as generally nasty, with the implication being that “there is no love lost between these two,” or, in this case, described as their “frequently trading barbs,” in an otherwise excellent analysis in
The Baltimore Sun.

The fact is that sometimes there is a major difference in the candidates in this regard. Yesterday’s ugly debate was one-sidedly nasty, even though both candidates were disdainful of the other...

Ruth Marcus and Joe McGinniss: A Model of Ethical Advocacy and a Cad

--Richard E. Vatz

This blog is about what some people have opined regarding writer Joe McGinniss’s moving in next door to Governor Sarah Palin to write a book on her. As described in disgustingly praising, jocular prose by Jack Shafer of Slate, McGinniss is “renting the house next door to the Palin family in Wasilla, Alaska, from which he is going to research and write his book -- that honors a long tradition of snooping. McGinniss's previous demonstration of overreach in pursuit of a story was to bid all the way to $60,101 in a charity auction on eBay last year for dinner with Palin before dropping out. Compared with that, renting a house next to Palin for five months seems pedestrian.”

What McGinniss is doing is simply despicable. No qualifiers are necessary. But, as I indicated, I am even more interested here in honor and dishonor in opinion-writing.
