On Saturday afternoon, the popular head teller at the New Windsor State Bank College Square branch in Westminster, Dawn Susan Buell, 51, stepped outside to enjoy a walk with her dog, when she was tragically struck and killed by a passing car.

Buell, a well-known longstanding bank employee in the Westminster community had previously worked at the old Carroll County Bank and Trust Co., before she went to work with New Windsor State Bank. She is fondly remembered as a people-person and an animal-lover, who planted flowers in the planters at the bank branch.

Dan Hartzler, the chair of the board of New Windsor State Bank said in phone interview on Monday, “the entire bank is at a loss. We are deeply saddened.”

Last Saturday afternoon, the popular head teller at the New Windsor State Bank College Square branch in Westminster, Dawn Susan Buell, 51, stepped outside to enjoy a walk with her dog, when she was tragically struck and killed by a passing car.

Buell, a well-known longstanding bank employee in the Westminster community had previously worked at the old Carroll County Bank and Trust Company, before she went to work with New Windsor State Bank.

She is fondly remembered as a people-person and an animal-lover, who planted flowers in the planters at the bank branch.

She had just celebrated her 51st birthday. Formerly of Gettysburg, she was born on April 24, 1959 in Baltimore. She was the daughter of the late James M. and Lillian M. (Giesler) Buell and a 1977 graduate of Westminster High School, according to her obituary.

She will be greatly missed by her friends, family, loved-ones and co-workers; especially her long-time boyfriend Jeffrey Young of Gettysburg, PA and her sister Gwyn, for whom she has been the loving and devoted caregiver for the past number of years.

It is well known that Buell loved and cared for all types of animals, however she was also an avid antique collector, and she loved to go shopping.

According to the Maryland State Police, on May 8th at 1:20 p.m. state police troopers and emergency responders from the Reese Volunteer Fire Company were called to Bethel Road and Sherwood Road, near the Bethel-Carrollton Church of God, between Carrollton and Patapsco in the greater Finksburg area of the county.

The State Police reported that Buell succumbed to injuries sustained as a result of the crash at the scene. State Police and the emergency responders were able to determine that Buell went to retrieve her dog as it suddenly darted into the street and she stepped in front of a 1998 Chrysler Sebring automobile, driven by Christopher Lee Childers, 19, from Westminster.

Her dog was injured in the accident and treated by a local veterinarian, police say. No charges have been placed against Childers as a result of the accident, although the road was closed for two hours after the accident and the investigation continues.

Dan Hartzler, the chair of the board of New Windsor State Bank said in phone interview on Monday, “the entire bank is at a loss. We are deeply saddened… She knew the banking business well. She was very much into people. She made you feel like you were the most important thing she had to do that day… Very much a community-oriented customer service person…,” Hartzler added as his voice trailed off.

Surviving are her brother James M. Buell and wife Karen, of Westminster, sister Gwyn L. Buell, of Finksburg; long-time boyfriend Jeffrey Young of Gettysburg, PA; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Cabllero, Todd Grimes, and Holly and Mandy Buell; great nieces and nephews, Bryson, Skylar and Maddox Cabllero. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Lynn Carol Young.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, with her pastor, the Rev. David L. Meador, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Carrollton Church of God Cemetery in Finksburg.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20037
